Over the past year, AFMC has taken important steps to strengthen the Student Portal and improve the visiting electives process for learners across Canada. With the introduction of the capacity-based model, learners are receiving more elective offers, facing fewer administrative barriers and moving through a process that is more consistent and equitable.
Eliminating application fees has reduced the average cost of securing a visiting elective from $550 to $175, saving learners an average of $375 per elective. Learner feedback has been positive, reinforcing confidence in the updated process.
To continue supporting a dependable and sustainable system, we are writing to share two important updates recently approved by the AFMC Board of Directors:
Registration Fee Update
In April 2024, the AFMC Board approved a 3.5% annual adjustment to the onetime registration fee. Implementation was paused in 2025 to support a smooth transition to the new model and will now take effect on April 1, 2026:
- $285 for domestic learners (from $276)
- $745 for international learners (from $718)
This modest increase supports the ongoing maintenance, reliability, and improvement of the Student Portal while preserving the substantial cost reductions now achieved for learners.
National Guidelines for Visiting Electives
To preserve fairness and transparency across institutions, learners must arrange their visiting clinical electives through the AFMC Student Portal or other established institutional structures. Learners should not contact preceptors, clinical sites, or faculty directly to arrange, hold, or inquire about elective availability, as this ensures equal access to information, timelines, and opportunities for all. We encourage learners to contact their home school for guidance.
These updates reflect our commitment to a visiting electives process that is clear, reliable, and equitable for learners. We will continue to share updates and remain available to respond to questions at service@afmcstudentportal.ca.
