The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada (AFMC) is seeking a Public Member designated to bring the perspective of the learner community to its Board of Directors.
This is a unique opportunity for a medical learner to contribute to national discussions on medical education, research, social accountability, and health care, while representing the perspectives of learners across Canada’s Faculties of Medicine.
AFMC is the academic partnership of Canada’s Faculties of Medicine. As the voice of Canadian academic medicine, AFMC supports excellence in medical education, research, and clinical care, while advancing priorities in social accountability and health for all Canadians.
The AFMC Board of Directors is composed of 24 Directors, including the Deans of Canada’s 19 Faculties of Medicine and five Public Members, including one member designated to bring the learner perspective to Board discussions and decision-making.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled as a medical student or resident at a Canadian Faculty of Medicine;
- Reside in Canada at the time of application and throughout the term;
- Maintain learner status for the duration of the appointment;
AFMC is particularly interested in candidates who have knowledge of the medical education system, are familiar with AFMC’s role, and/or have experience with a Canadian learner organization.
What You’ll Do
The learner representative will:
- Bring learner perspectives to Board discussions and strategic decisions
- Contribute to conversations that support learners, faculty, and medical schools across Canada
- Help inform AFMC’s work in advancing excellence in medical education, research, social accountability, and health for all Canadians
Commitment
The appointment is for an initial three-year term and may be renewed while eligibility requirements continue to be met. If the Public Member designated to bring the perspective of the learner community ceases to be enrolled at a Canadian Faculty of Medicine, relocates outside of Canada, or otherwise no longer meets the eligibility requirements, they will no longer be eligible to continue serving as a Public Member of the Board.
Board activities include:
- In-person meetings in Ottawa each fall
- An in-person meeting held during the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM) each spring
- Virtual Board meetings in the winter and early summer
- Quarterly two-hour virtual special calls
The successful candidate will be invited to attend the AFMC Board meeting on November 2-3, 2026, in Ottawa.
This is a volunteer position. Travel expenses related to in-person Board activities will be reimbursed in accordance with AFMC’s travel policy.
